The game was released on May 14th, 2013, on Xbox 360, PC through Steam and, unlike Metro 2033, on the PS3. With this new installment, 4A has introduced a multitude of new weapons, such as the bolt-action rifle, a single-shot pistol, a hand-powered chain gun, as well as new locations to play in. In this setting, Artyom's allies: Khan and the other Rangers, join forces once again to defend D6 from many foes including the Fourth Reich, communists, and bandits. The story continues on from the canonical ending of the previous game, in which Artyom destroyed the mysterious new mutant threat, the Dark Ones. The story takes place after Metro 2033, with a new story guided by Dmitry Glukhovsky but written in-house at 4A Games. In this inhospitable landscape, the player must guide Artyom into following friends, battling dangerous mutants, and engaging in firefights with enemy factions, or complex stealth missions in which remaining unseen is vital for survival. But you can't give away Ranger Mode for free if it was exclusive content for pre-orders either. Obviously retailers have their own incentives to drive pre-orders, and exclusive content is a big part of that. Hardcore fans, most likely to pre-order the game, are also the most likely to want to play on Ranger mode and they get it at no extra cost thanks to pre-ordering. That actually makes pretty good sense to me. “We took all the steps we could to ensure that, while still offering retailers a pre-order incentive that met their needs, we did not force players to pre-order, or make them wait to get this content.”
